Family dentistry is referred to as a type of
dentistry that provides primary and comprehensive preventive and
therapeutic oral health care for patients of all ages. Family
dentistry is intended to cater to all types of dental
problems to any member of the family, including infants, children, and
adults.
Family dentistry covers all dentistry practices
including prevention, diagnosis, evaluation, surgical and non-surgical
treatments, or prescribing for any pain, disease, deformity, disorders,
injury or conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area, adjacent
and associated structures, restoring and maintaining dental health.Ffamily dentistry includes prescribing and
fabrication of dental prostheses and appliances.
The person authorized to perform family dentistry is
called family dentist. Like a general dentist, a family dentist does
not specialize in only one particular facet of dentistry. In actual
fact, family dentistry involves both routine and
specialized oral care such as implants, cosmetic dentistry procedures,
sedation, tooth whitening, and laser operations. Implants are small
screw-like fixtures that serve as the replacement for the root portion
of a missing natural tooth. Sedation is a painless dental care
procedure used to patients with high anxiety and dental phobic. Tooth
whitening includes products or machines used to whiten stained teeth.
Family dentistry includes examination, cleaning or
oral prophylaxis, periodontal therapy, periodontal maintenance, root
canal therapy, extractions, enamel bonding, and bleaching. Accordingly,
examination refers to the inspection of the oral cavity. On the other
hand, cleaning teeth involves removing stains and soft and hard plaque
from both above and below the teeth and gums. Periodontal therapy and
maintenance include scaling and all other treatment for periodontal
disease, which can cause tooth loss, while root canal therapy is the
treatment for infected pulp or nerve and blood supply. Extraction is
done when the tooth needs to be removed. Enamel bonding is the process
of applying, shaping, and then curing a thin layer of composite resin
to the tooth surface. Bleaching is a safe and effective method to
brighten teeth.
Family dentistry also involves dental solutions such
as full or partial removable dentures for missing teeth, bridges that
are cemented to replace single or multiple missing teeth, and porcelain
laminate veneers which can be bonded to a tooth to change the color,
shape, or alignment.
