General family dentistry refers to the dental
practice that involves various procedures necessary to provide major
preventive and therapeutic dental health care for patients in all age
groups. General family dentistry focuses on dealing
with all types of dental problems to any member of the family including
infants, children, adults and elders. In essence, general
family dentistry is the study of oral health, dental problems
and disease, as well as the different treatments and techniques used to
prevent or cure these problems.
General family dentistry involves dentistry
practices such as prevention, diagnosis, evaluation, surgical and
non-surgical treatments. This study of dentistry aims to restore and
maintain dental health. Mainly, general family
dentistry also includes prescribing for any oral pain,
disease, deformity, disorders, injury or bad conditions, and
fabrication of dental prostheses and appliances.
Dental procedures in general family dentistry
consist of implants, cosmetic dentistry procedures, tooth whitening,
and laser operations. It also covers sedation, a painless dental care
procedure used to patients with high anxiety and dental phobic. The
basic procedures involved in general family
dentistry are regular check-up or examination, teeth cleaning
or oral prophylaxis, tooth and gum examinations, periodontal therapy,
periodontal maintenance, root canal therapy, extractions, enamel
bonding, bleaching, fluoride treatment, polishing and scaling teeth,
and the variety of fillings that are done to restore teeth to working
order, as well as any required x-rays which is done only when needed.
One of the most common solutions in general family
dentistry is the full or partial removable dentures for
missing teeth, and bridges that are cemented to replace single or
multiple missing teeth. But because of new technologies, a better
solution was developed, the implants. Implants are small screw-like
fixtures that serve as the replacement for the root portion of a
missing natural tooth. This is very similar to and as useful as natural
teeth.
For stained teeth, bleaching and cleaning is recommended. Cleaning also
involves removing stains and soft and hard plaque from both above and
below the teeth and gums. Plaque can produce decay causing acids. When
decay created a cavity, it can be filled with composite or plastic
tooth filling, or glass ionomer cement fillings.
