An implant dentist is a dental health provider that
specializes in replacing missing natural teeth with natural-looking
ones or dental implants. Dental implants are small screw-like fixtures
that serve as the replacement for the root portion of a missing natural
tooth. One of the quality materials to integrate with natural bone is
titanium. An implant dentist places the implants in
the bone of the upper or lower jaw. These implants can be used to
replace one or more lost tooth.
Dental implants are used to combat edentulism. Edentulism is the dental
term for tooth loss. This can result in health problems such as
resorption and damaged teeth. Resorption is a process wherein the
jawbones weaken and shrink due to the absence of teeth.
Implant dentist performs different types of
implants. One example is an implant called subperiostial implant. This
is done through placing the implants on top of the jawbone but under
the gums. Subperiostial implants are used by an implant
dentist in cases of advanced jawbone resorption.
Another is the root form implant, which is looks similar in shape to
the natural tooth. This type has the implants rooted into the jawbone.
In this process, an implant dentist inserts the
implants directly into incisions in the bone. In about six weeks, the
bone and the gums grow around the root form.
When resorption has already shrunk the jawbone until it is too narrow
for root form implants, bone grafting is used. implant
dentists perform bone grafting by filling in the missing bone
either with the patient's own bone called autografts, the bone of a
human donor or allografts, animal bone (xenografts), or synthetic
material that mimics natural bone or the alloplastic grafts.
When the jaw is too narrow for either root form implants or bone
grafting, implant dentists use the plate form
implants. In the plate implant process, the implant
dentist will implant the plate form into the jawbone and
stitch the gums around the implant.
All of the implants require a healing period or treatment time. This
healing period is called osseointegration. Osseointegration depends on
the type of implants. After osseointegration, the final replacement
teeth are inserted. This is done mostly by surgical dentists.
