A sedation dentist, also known as sleep dentist, provides
painless dental care to patients with high anxiety and dental phobia
through sedation dentistry procedures. Sedation dentistry is a safe and
effective method of providing dental care with a foremost degree of
comfort to those who have fears and anxieties about dental care.
Primarily, sedation dentistry involves two kinds of sedation: conscious
sedation and unconscious sedation.
In a conscious sedation, all body functions remain intact or normal. A sedation dentist puts
the patient in a very deep relaxation. This type of sedation allows
patient to speak or respond to the requests, but it also has a very
profound amnesic effect. Conscious sedation has different forms. One is
called I.V. or intravenous sedation wherein medications are
administered directly into the person’s blood stream. Another is the
orally administered sedation, wherein medication comes in the form of a
pill or liquid and the patient swallows the medication.
Unconscious sedation is commonly referred to as general anesthesia. In this type of sedation, the sedation dentist
puts the patient to sleep. The muscles of the patient stop working;
that is why the anesthesiologist has to use a machine to keep breathing
for the patient.
Some sedation dentists utilize laughing gas. Laughing gas is an
old medical name for nitrous oxide, a gas that can cause general
anesthesia (loss of feeling or awareness). Laughing gas is used in
sleep dentistry or conscious sedation. It enables sedation dentists to
help apprehensive patients get that anxiety free dentistry that they
need.
People who are advised to visit a sedation dentist include those who
have extreme dental fear and are dental phobic. They may have had
painful dental care or traumatic dental experiences in the past.
Sedation dentists
specialize in treating patients with a high amount of
dental anxiety.
Sedation dentists also treat those who have overly sensitive teeth.
Also, they provide treatments to people who have a very bad gag reflex,
who need complex dental work done in less time, and those who have
difficulty responding to freezing and getting numb prefer sedation
dentistry.
Other people who go to sedation dentists are those patients who hate
the sounds and smells of the dental office, or those who do not like
the tastes of products used by the dentist, or people who are extremely
embarrassed about their teeth.
