A denture is a detachable replacement for a missing tooth or teeth and
its surrounding tissues. For this reason, it’s only natural for anyone
to feel uncomfortable when wearing dentures for the first time. Your
denture can be adjusted to fit you well and make you feel at ease.
After some fine-tunings, you can remove you denture before going to
sleep and put it back in the morning. But predominantly, one of the
main causes of denture discomfort is poor fitting. So in order to
prevent this from happening, here are some important considerations you
have to take note of.
Keep your dentures clean. Brush the denture on a daily basis by
means of a denture brush. This is necessary to eliminate food deposits
and plaque, and to prevent the denture from becoming stained. Don’t use
a toothbrush with hard bristles because they can break the denture.
Make use of denture cleansers that has the American Dental Association
(ADA) Seal of Acceptance. In cleaning the dentures, you have to gently
clean those teeth that fit under the denture's metal clasps. It’s
mainly for the reason that the plaque that has piled up under the
clasps may double the risk of tooth decay.
A denture might deform if not kept moist. That’s why it is of the
essence to soak the dentures in water or a soaking solution overnight.
But, in case the appliance has metal attachments, there is a big
possibility that it might get stained if placed in soaking solution.
It is also good to brush your gums, tongue and palate with a
soft-bristled toothbrush before you wear your dentures. This will help
in getting rid of plaque and promotes circulation in the mouth. Putting
into practice a well-balanced diet is also vital to keep the mouth in
good physical shape.
Use over-the-counter pain reliever. Over-the-counter pain reliever
such as ibuprofen, aspirin, and acetaminophen is of use in taking the
sting out of the pain. However, if the pain keeps on see your dentist
to assess your condition.
Rinse with salt water or hydrogen peroxide. To ease the pain,
it helps if you rinse your mouth with salt water. Salt water is made by
dissolving half a teaspoon of salt to warm water. Remove the dentures
and rinse your mouth for at least 3 to 4 hours. You can also make use
of hydrogen peroxide. Cleanse your mouth with oral 3% of hydrogen
peroxide. This can wipe away the bacteria, making your mouth free from
dental cavities.
Take them out. Removing your dentures at night is
suggested to all denture wearers for this allows your mouth to recover.
Before going to bed, take out your dentures and soak them in a cleaning
solution or water. If you're unable to take them out at night they
should be soaked for at least 30 minutes every day. Soaking your
dentures facilitates to eradicating stains and preventing the spread of
plaque which is responsible for the development of oral infections and
odors.
