Canker sores are among the common mouth sores that strike a person’s
mouth. These can last for one to two weeks; if it takes longer than
that, then you need to consult your dentist for the right treatment.
But for initial treatment, here are some usable tips to follow for immediate relief:
1. Rinse your mouth with a salt water solution. Put some salt in
warm water; dissolve it and use the solution as a mouth rinse. It is
painful, but the pain causes the sore to become numb for at least a
moment or two.
2. Why not try some tea. Get a tea bag and drench it in warm
water for about a minute. Squeeze out the excess water. Then hold the
tea bag, as long as possible, on the canker sore. It hurts, but it can
minimize the redness and allow the sore to heal more rapidly.
3. The power of Alum. Alum is considered as the best method to
relieve the canker sores. It can be found in the spice section of any
store. It causes pain and it tastes bad, but by using Alum the canker
sore will disappear in just a day. Put a bit of Alum on the area
affected by canker sores. It hurts but you can expect for satisfying
relief.
4. Count on over-the-counter. According to Becky DeSpain, the
Director of the Caruth School of Dental Hygiene at Baylor College of
Dentistry in Dallas, over-the-counter products such as Orabase with
Benzocaine is “like an oral bandage” for the reason that “it covers up
the surface.” The use of over-the-counter products can keep the sore
coated, thus preventing the growth of a secondary infection. Some
products that can also ease the pain are those with xylocane, which is
a type of local anesthetic.
5. Take medications. In order to lessen the pain, you can take
an aspirin, acetaminophen, or ibuprofen before meals. This is
especially true if the canker sores serve as hindrance to your eating.
6. Be conscious on what you eat. The food you eat can be a
causative factor on the development of canker sores. Because of this,
it is very fundamental to watch what you eat. Avoid eating foods that
are hot, whether it is warm or spicy. This is in view of the fact that
they can swell up and hurt the canker sores. Some studies also show
that chocolate can also cause canker sores. Other foods that may
contribute to this culprit are nuts, shellfish, tomatoes, oranges or
any other citric fruits.
7. Do away with bad habits. According to Richard Price, D.M.D.,
consumer adviser/spokesperson for the American Dental Association,
alcohol and smoking can inflame canker sores. On account of this, a
little moderation for these habits will likely save you from the ill
effects of canker sores.
8. Fight stress! As much as possible, avoid too much stress.
Stress that is unrestrained can give rise to the occurrence of severe
health problems such as migraines, hypertension, heart ailments, and
gastric/intestinal disorders. Stress is also identified as one of the
causative factors why canker sores develop in a person.
